A presentation given at the Pro-Am session of the Joint European National Astronomy Meeting (JENAM) on 2009 April 21. Spectroscopy is a key tool for the professional astronomer with most papers having some reference to spectroscopic data. In the amateur domain however spectroscopists, particularly those attempting to generate scientifically useful data, are rather few and far between. They are however growing in number and capability, due to a large extent to the progress being made in two European groups. One is the "Spectroscopy Working Group", part of the German amateur association "Vereinigung der Sternfreunde" (VdS) and the other is the French "Astronomical Ring for Access to Spectroscopy" (ARAS). The membership of these organisations extends beyond their home countries and both have forged links within the professional sphere to identify areas where amateurs can contribute to the science and develop the technology and techniques needed.
