Thermonuclear carbon burning at constant temperature and density under conditions corresponding to the carbon-oxygen cores of red giants is examined, taking into account secondary reactions, the nuclear reaction rates reported by Fowler et al. (1975), and the strong screening factor obtained by Graboske et al. (1975). The main products of carbon burning are found to be the elements Ne-20, Ne-21, Ne-22, Na-23, and Mg-24 (symbolizing all heavier elements as well). It is shown that the final abundances of these elements after carbon exhaustion depend only slightly on the chosen temperature, while the final abundances of elements lighter than Ne-20 (e.g., N-14, N-15, O-18, F-19) are strongly temperature-dependent.
