The production of molecular hydrogen in dense interstellar clouds is considered. The authors evaluate the production of molecular hydrogen by bombardment of grain icy mantles from low energy cosmic rays. A Monte Carlo simulation of this process has been performed on the basis of the experimental evidence that H2 is released by hydrogen-rich frozen gas (H2O, CH4, NH3, C6H6, C6H12) irradiated by energetic (keV - MeV) ions. The main result is that the production rate of H2 can be orders of magnitude higher than the recombination rate of H atoms adsorbed on amorphous grains at temperatures of about 10K, characteristic of a cloud core.
