The present paper describes the production process and reports test results for the optical elements of two 2.2-m telescopes built for the Max Planck Institute of Astronomy, Heidelberg, West Germany. The optical system includes a rigorous Ritchey-Chretien (RC) system, a two-element correction lens that can be switched just in front of the RC-image plane, a two-mirror system for the coude focus, and two plane reflecting mirrors. The interference patterns of the mirrors are evaluated, and systematic errors are synthesized. The test results indicate that the optical system meets the quality specification of 70 per cent energy concentration in 0.3 arcsec and 90 per cent in 0.6 arcsec diameter.
