The effect of encounters between close binaries and field stars is examined. Analytical estimates obtained in the framework of the restricted hyperbolic three-body problem indicate that reversible secular changes in the orbital eccentricity of the binary star occur during an encounter and that the magnitude of this effect is proportional to the inverse square root of the initial impact parameter. In the case of contact binaries, the change in eccentricity is found to lead to periodic collisions between the system components with the frequency of the orbital period. Scales of gas loss from a system and energy loss due to gas flows are estimated. It is shown that the total mass and energy loss experienced by all contact binaries in galactic nuclear regions with densities as low as 100,000 stars per cu pc may be so great that it should be taken into account when explaining the energetics of such regions.
