The paper is concerned with fundamental problems regarding the determination of the origin of the earth, viz. duration of the formation of the earth, and the role of large bodies in this process. The theory of Schmidt in its present-day representation demonstrates the relatively cold central part of the primary earth as well as the relatively hot (close-to-melting) outer mantle containing significant local thermal inhomogeneities. For this reason the principal stage of early evolution - melting of material and its differentiation in terms of density - is recognized to begin at a shallow depth (about 300 km) and to gradually extend to greater depths. Convection takes place at a later time, starting first in the outer layers of the earth. Other models of the earth's evolution are also discussed.
