Some aspects of establishing photometric standards, in particular for the UBV system, are discussed. Attention is centered on such topics as visual and photographic standards; the development and general acceptance of the photometric UBV system; research work carried off at the Cape Observatory; differential photometric standards; and the system of sixth-magnitude standards near the Kapteyn fields.
