Survey of published data and prevailing concepts about the trace metal atoms found in the lower ionosphere. Observational methods and conclusions are critically discussed. It is maintained that in view of the desultory nature of the observations and the complexity of the accompanying phenomena a more systematic approach is needed. A program of combined optical and radio observations, proceeding from an understanding of aeronomic phenomena, atmospheric dynamics, and meteor fluxes, is proposed.
