We still lack knowledge about the origin of thermonuclear supernovae (SN Ia), despite their huge cosmological and galactochemical importance. It seems likely that the evolution leading up to the SN Ia explosion involves mass transfer from a companion star onto the progenitor white dwarf. Detecting the wind from the companion in such a binary system would offer a breakthrough in our understanding of the progenitors of SN Ia. We request observations using the ATCA array primarily at 3cm of a nearby (D<20 Mpc) SN Ia, scheduled as soon as possible after its detection, making this a NAPA proposal. It is essential that initial observations are performed early after the explosion, because the dense circumstellar gas will be overtaken quickly, thus making the SN fade away rapidly. We require up to three runs of deep radio observations, each separated by roughly 10 days.
