Lyman alpha galaxies provide a valuable probe of reionization, because neutral intergalactic gas will suppress the observed line emission from such galaxies for neutral fractions above 0.3 to 0.5. I will review the physics underlying Lyman alpha reionization tests, and review their applications to date.
By studying the luminosity function and spatial distribution of Lyman alpha galaxies, we have shown that the IGM at z=6.5 is already mostly ionized with a neutral fraction < 50% (Malhotra & Rhoads 2004). We can also show that the volume ionized fraction of the IGM is greater than 50% (Malhotra & Rhoads 2006).
Future refinements of this test may allow topological probes of reionization through mapping of ionized bubbles (Rhoads 2007).
