We request 42 hours of time be allocated on the ATCA to this proposed, high resolution study of an established star-formation region in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The Magellanic Clouds represent two of the closest galaxies available for study of physical processes in extragalactic systems. The two major components of the Magellanic System; the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC, LMC) are tidally perturbed, metal-poor and gas-rich dwarf galaxies, which have formed an interacting triad with our Galaxy. The Magellanic System in general therefore hosts a very dynamic and unique ISM. At a relatively very close distance of ~55-60 kpc, studies of astrophysical processes at high spatial resolution are possible, making the Clouds an ideal target for developing and refining the understanding of mechanisms which are central to the evolution of galaxies. Furthermore, the ISM in these irregular, dwarf systems may be regarded as a template for conditions leading to star formation across more ancient time-scales, where low-metallicity and weak magnetic fields are more typical. The following proposal is a slightly modified version from a previous submission (2004-OCT, C1488) which was rejected because the requestion configuration was not to be scheduled.
