A general algorithm for simulating one-dimensional lines of sight through a cellular universe is presented. The basic structure adopted for the model universe, known as Voronoi space partition, is strongly supported by several observational and theoretical arguments. This code provides, in particular, a useful tool to study spatial structure in the Lyman-alpha forest. As an application, the ability of close QSO pairs to probe the characteristic length of the structure is investigated; it is shown that, from the observational point of view, single lines of sight remain the most efficient way to perform the test via the shape of the two-point correlation function. A possible extension of the model to three-dimensional situations is also illustrated by simulations of deep galaxy surveys.
