A probability approach is used to examine the plausibility of ballistic models as the explanation for the superluminal phenomenon observed in extragalactic sources including the quasars 3C 273, 3C 279, and 3C 345 and the nucleus of Seyfert galaxy 3C 120. The analysis is applied to four two-component models for the sources: (1) a stationary and an ultrarelativistic source; (2) two ultrarelativistic sources; (3) a stationary source and a tachyonic source; and (4) two tachyonic sources. The low probability found for all four models argues against the ballistic description of superluminal sources.
