Cometary Tails: Sizes

The apparition of the two great comets Hyakutake and Hale-Bopp allowed to many amateur astronomers to devote theirself to delicate computation of apparent visual tail length and to compare their predictions with reality. The prediction of the apparent length of a comet tail is not an easy job, because it is necessary to estimate its intrinsic length and this depends on many factors, like physical and chemical cometary structure and solar activity, all hard to determine. Andreas Kammerer, of German Comet Section, tried to solve the problem proposing an algorithm from which it is possible to obtain the logarithm of theoretical tail length in million kilometers. In this article the author, starting from Kammerer's work, arrives, through easy passages, at apparent length of cometary tail.
