It is noted that the general objective of the ESA scientific satellite mission Exosat is to gain a greater understanding of high-energetic cosmic processes. The various scientific mission objectives are described, and the main characteristics of the scientific payload, satellite, launcher Ariane and ground element (ESOC) are given. The planned technical goals for the development models are compared with those actually achieved, emphasizing particularities of the structure and test software development. The present status of the flight model program and of the planned launch operations at CSG, French Guyana, is discussed.
