The satellite project HIPPARCOS/TYCHO, aiming at an improvement of the accuracy of astrometric measurements, is presented. The spacecraft, its payload, and its instrumentation are described. The scientific objectives of the HIPPARCOS mission are presented. The TYCHO experiment, the data flow, and data evaluation are presented. A computer program was developed and implemented to solve the special problem related to the calibration of the photometric data from more than 1 million stars in the TYCHO experiment. The results show that, in spite of the large number of measurements, all the data can be calibrated and reduced.
