The Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) project systematically searched the skies for earth-approaching asteroids and comets since 1995 using 1-meter class telescopes at Palomar Observatory, CA and at the Maui Space Surveillance System (MSSS) on the summit of Haleakala, HI.
With sky coverage repeating frequently, NEAT has the unique ability to monitor outbursts and seasonal activity of active and/or quasi-active bodies, precover new discoveries, and determine their lightcurve amplitude and variability with phase. In addition, the NEAT database can provide visual-band observations which are nearly simultaneous with spacecraft observations taken at different wavelengths. These data may provide constraints on the albedo of an object and determine if the object was active during the observations.
Although NEAT observations ceased in 2007, today this massive archive of images can serve as a rich source of data for various research projects. We shall present preliminary results of relative photometry of various Centaurs and main-belt comets, as well as spacecraft targets, such as the cometary nuclei observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope during the Survey of Ensemble Physical Properties of Cometary Nuclei (SEPPCoN) project, and long-term monitoring of the Pluto system. These preliminary results constrain the presence, duration and intensity of an object's activity and seasonal evolution, and provide complementary ground-based observations with spacecraft observations.
The research described here was carried out, in part, by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with NASA.
