The shock-induced phase transformations of olivine, an important component of terrestrial basalts and mantle materials, lunar mare basalts and meteorites, were studied. Shock recovery experiments involving olivine single crystals were carried out in a pressure range of 200 to 575 kbar; infrared spectroscopic examinations of the samples were performed. Transformations in the mineral were noted in the pressure interval of 420 to 575 kbar, and a complete decomposition of the olivine to an X-ray amorphous material was observed after subjection to dynamic pressure of about 575 kbar. The infrared transmission spectra of the transformed products indicated a composition involving short-range-ordered (Mg, Fe)O and SiO2.
