The well-known difficulty of separating the counting rate of a balloon-borne detector into the local and the cosmic contribution is discussed applying a newly proposed method. This method consists in the derivation of an atmospheric source function (which includes scattered primaries) using only the data and making no hypothesis as to its form. This experimentally determined function is then integrated to calculate the local component and the primary residual. A preliminary application to data from a recent balloon flight indicates the efficiency of the method.
