The use of elemental composition of rocks for deducing information on the geochemical processes responsible for rock formation is discussed. Particular attention is given to modeling rock systems and to some erroneous preconceptions existing in modern geochemistry, including a misconception that REE patterns in a set of rocks necessarily supply profound information on these rocks and that one single REE pattern may characterize all chondritic meteorites. The importance of choosing correct representative rock samples, due to the variability among the individual materials in question is emphasized, showing that complex rock systems can be amenable to quantitative compositional modeling. Data are presented on trace-element trends and the petrogenesis of lunar pyroclastic green glasses, showing that the compositional trends reported in the past were a result of weighing error, and, thus, do not exist.
