Position and profile of molecular absorption lines in the infrared were investigated in order to obtain information about pressure and temperature of astronomical objects. A laser sideband spectrometer with high resolution was developed. Light of a CO2 laser is modulated with microwave frequencies using the electro-optical effect. The spectrometer was tested on position and profiles of absorption lines of the molecules NH3 and C2H4 and shows a resolution of 3 million. Measurements on CH3F show that the sideband laser is a suitable local oscillator for astronomical heterodyne spectrometers.
