A number of systematic comparisons between experimental and theoretical line strengths and lifetimes for neutral atoms are given which provide some insights into the achievements, but also the short-comings of atomic-structure calculations. The first example deals with the resonance transitions in the neutral alkalis. The line strengths of the resonance transitions in all alkalis are known very accurately from recent lifetime measurements. A comprehensive overview of recent experimental and theoretical work is given. The second example deals with the optical and near-infrared transitions in the noble gases. The 4s-4p transition array in argon is chosen as an example. The comparison of theoretical results with recently measured accurate lifetimes for the Ar 4p states reveals the deficiencies of the existing atomic-structure calculations on noble gases.
