Satellites carrying altimeters can measure the height of the satellite above the ocean surface with an accuracy of about 2 cm to 10 cm. In order to use fully these data, for studies of ocean topography, it is necessary to determine the height of the satellite above a reference surface with a similar accuracy; it is also necessary to calibrate the altimetric measurements. These points require a precise orbit determination in order to obtain an absolute satellite position with an accuracy of a few centimeters, at least locally, and essentially for the radial component. Considering the value of the expected accuracy of the radar altimeters, the use of a short-arc technique based on a geometric approach should permit us to take into account local errors in limited geographical regions which can not be considered in a global orbit computation by a dynamical approach. Our method consists in fitting the geometrical positions of the satellite over a short period of time with the tracking measurements from a ground station network and considering a simplified orbital error model. We correct the reference orbit by applying along-track, across-track and radial displacements, that are represented as simple constants, or with a linear or quadratic variation in time. The ability of the short-arc technique to reach the required accuracy on the radial orbit component is shown.
