The algorithms necessary for correct position determination for the ERS-1 spacecraft, which will carry three positioning systems, are summarized. The positioning systems include a range/rate sensor, a laser retroreflector and microwave-based precision range and rate equipment. The goal is to treat the data accurately enough to obtain 10 cm accuracy on ocean wave height measurements. Further work is still required to model the drag coefficient of the ERS-1, to reduce the presently large errors in all gravity field models, nd to adjust the positioning measurements for minor perturbations due to the gravitational influences of the sun and moon. Tidal corrections are being attempted with solid-earth models, ocean tide calculations, ocean surface topography corrections and a geoid correction.
