It is pointed out that free precession, which provides a plausible explanation for the 35-d quasi-sinusoidal period and intensity variation of Her X-1, could directly account for the shape of the light curves of the transient X-ray sources. The rapid mass transfer accompanying the close approach of a neutron star (or white dwarf) to its main sequence companion might well provide the torque necessary to excite free precession of large amplitude in the collapsed object.
