Consideration is given to the abiotic generation of oxygen in the primitive earth atmosphere by the direct photodissociation of atmospheric water vapor by solar UV radiation. It is argued that, in contrast to the very dry stratosphere of the present atmosphere, the paleoatmosphere may have been both warm and moist above an altitude of 10 km, resulting in equilibrium abiotic oxygen levels in the Precambrian of up to 0.01 to 0.1 times the present level during particularly warm and moist conditions. Such levels would have been sufficient to produce a biologically effective Precambrian ozone layer.
