This article presents information on statistical theory, with emphasis on nonparametric statistical methods, which can be of practical use to astronomers. First, some basic definitions are presented followed by a discussion of the normal (Gaussian) distribution. The central limit theorem is stated, noting its use in allowing quantitative probabilities to be estimated in experimental situations where the form of the underlying probability distribution is unknown. Finally, some consideration is given to signal detection problems in astronomy with particular reference to the normal distribution and use of the central limit theorem.
