The ESO's La Silla Observatory monitored the near-nucleus and large scale activity of comet Halley from mid-February 1986; images were obtained by three telescopes during an 8-week period with excellent observing conditions, documenting the postperihelion behavior of the comet. Attention is presently given to the instruments and procedures employed, characterizing the major structures and events seen at the time of closest approach by spacecraft over the March 5-March 14, 1986 period.
