The front of plasma wave sources, associated with Type III radio bursts, is studied in the framework of a one-dimensional kinetic beam-plasma interaction model. 'Bump on tail' (nonuniform, high-energy) electron beams are used to describe the beam velocity distribution, and the unstable mode growth inside the emitting source is evaluated. The source front is defined by the condition that the wave amplification reaches a minimum value on the time scale of the resonant interaction with the transient beam electrons. The space dependence of the electron beam density is shown to induce a slowdown of the plasmon source front as the distance from the sun increases. This results in a delay between the local plasma wave onset and the electron event onset.
