This paper considers the main observational characteristics of absorption lines of classes I and II which are formed in the spectra of distant quasars when the line of sight crosses the gaseous complexes in the intervening objects. Emphasis has been put on the discussion of the possible nature of objects responsible for numerous class-II absorption lines (the so-called "Lα-forest" lines). The paper considers the possible nature of clouds where 21-cm absorption lines are formed that are sometimes observed in radio spectra of quasars. The luminosity, size and mass of the objects responsible for the formation of 21-cm lines are estimated. The objects are similar to globular clusters in terms of these characteristics, though the former have relatively larger amounts of gas (≡50 M_sun;).
