Prognoz satellite measurements have shown that the plasmasphere can be divided into two zones: a 'cold' inner zone with an ion temperature of about 10,000 K and a 'hot' outer zone with an ion temperature of about 100,000 K. A theoretical model is developed which shows that the hot zone consists of a thermal plasma with a temperature of about 10,000 K and hot protons with an energy exceeding 0.1 keV and a density of about 1 per cu cm.
