The possible existence of a new cause of anomalous redshifts of photons originating from distant sources implies, in principle, observable consequences in laboratory experiments. One of these consequences, within the framework of a possible photon-boson scattering model, is a small systematic deformation of all symmetrical spectral lines; such an effect has already been observed in the case of the 6058-A line of krypton-86, which serves to define the standard meter.
