The method of coupled modes is used to obtain an equation describing nonlinear stationary waves in an unbounded compressible isothermal atmosphere. An analysis is presented of the solution, which is in the form of a solitary internal gravity wave propagating in the horizontal direction. It is shown that intense perturbations of this type can propagate with a velocity significantly exceeding the velocity of sound.
