A new method to study the Martian aerosol is the subject of this paper. This method is based on measuring the reflected solar radiation in the CO2 band 2.7 μm by instruments onboard Mars-orbiting spacecraft. To estimate the potentialities of this method, the authors have calculated the synthetic Martian spectra around 2.7 μm with allowance made for scattering. The limits of applicability of the single scattering approximation, when determining the aerosol optical depth, are considered. The authors have formulated the basic requirements for spectral observations, which are necessary to carry out the above sounding. In this connection, the performance of the Planetary Fourier Spectrometer (PFS) for the European Mars-Express mission is described in more detail.
