As part of the 1978 European Summer Campaign for a study of the noctilucent clouds (NLC) the positive ion composition and the electron density were measured in the D region above Esrange on July 30 and on August 13. Faint noctilucent clouds were observed from an aircraft previous to the launch sequences. The altitude of the NLC on July 30 was 82.5 to 83.5 km determined from an in situ measurement of the backscatter light on the downleg of the rocket flight S32. Positive ions were measured with a magnetic sector field spectrometer in the mass range 14 to 230 amu. On July 30, the composition of the positive ions in the D region exhibited an unusual variation of protohydrated ions. Around the mesopause between 77 and 90 km protonhydrates are the dominant positive ions exceeding the molecular ions N0 + and O2 + by more than a factor of 50.
