Tetrapyrrole pigments of the Triassic oil shale of Serpiano, Switzerland have been investigated by means of thin layer chromatography and mass spectrometry. A large number of pigments related to the previously known deoxophyllerythroetioporphyrin and mesoetioporphyrin, their vanadium complexes and the corresponding chlorins were isolated. The pigments extend over the range C 27 -C 34 , the largest pigment containing two carbon atoms more than deoxophyllerythroetioporphyrin. Mechanisms for the geochemical formation of these pigments are suggested. A sequence of unknown porphyrins is also described.
