A representative sample of the early Precambrian Onverwacht carbonaceous chert has a porosity of 0.5 per cent and permeability of 5.7 × 10 -7 millidarcy. It is calculated that during a period of 3 × 10 9 yr a quantity of at least 0.35 g dissolved C 9 -C 30 n -alkanes in water can flow through 1 m 3 volume of this rock. "Biological markers", such as the few mg quantity of isoprenoid hydrocarbons in 1 m 3 of this chert, could have been brought into the rock at a later age and, therefore, they may not be indigenous to the early Precambrian environment.
