With reference to polytropes, a generalized Lame-Emden equation of index n is obtained by introducing two defined nondimensional variables. The equation is applicable for any value of n (including the isothermal case) except for n equal to 1, which is the constant pressure case. The solutions are considered in terms of the characteristics of singular points on a plane, and an instability criterion is derived. This criterion permits transformation of the stability problem into a geometrical problem, and, for the Emden solution, the whole range of n is divided into a stable region, a thermally unstable region, and a gravitationally unstable region.
