Techniques for the analysis of polynomial dispersion relations are discussed which yield algebraic conditions for the occurrence of instabilities with time scales less than any specified period. Two examples are provided to demonstrate the use of these techniques with the dispersion relation for infinitesimal density and temperature perturbations in an initially uniform steady-state gas and the dispersion relation that describes density perturbations in the line-driven stellar wind of a hot star. Some alternative formulations are also outlined.
