Rotational band contours of vibronic transitions of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are simulated for various physical and instrumental conditions corresponding to observations of the diffuse interstellar absorption bands (DIBs). A set of calculated band profiles, in particular for coronene vibronic transitions, can be used as standard examples of expected DIB profiles if PAHs are their carriers. A comparison is made of simulated PAH band profiles and the intrinsic profiles, derived by Westerlund and Krelowski, of four narrow DIBs in the visible region. The calculated multi-peak structures are not observed. The consequences for the PAH assignment of DIBs are discussed. Several possible reasons are evoked for the non observation of multi-peak structures, in the case that the DIB assignment to PAHs is valid. Higher resolution observations of DIBs under non-turbulent, single molecular cloud, conditions, and laboratory investigation of non radiative transitions in PAH monocations, are called for in order to further test the PAH assignment.
