Polarization measurements are presented for 11 stars within and near the dark cloud of the M17 nebula. Observations were made with a two-channel computer controlled UBVRI photopolarimeter at two different passbands simultaneously, and at a wavelength of 1075 nm. Foreground-corrected measurements confirm the large-scale alignment of polarization vectors of stars within the cloud. The wavelength dependence of polarization is found to agree in most cases with that found by Serkowski et al. (1975) for the general interstellar field, with a mean wavelength of maximum polarization of 586 + or - 13 nm for the central stars. A linear correlation between maximum polarization and visual extinction is observed, with ratios of polarization to extinction greater than 3%/magnitude, which implies a very efficient polarization mechanism.
