The paper deals with the design and principle of polarimeters of the type employed on board the Intercosmos satellites. Polarization data obtained with these instruments are compared with data calculated on the basis of various models of a nonthermal X-ray source. It is shown that both the degree and lifetime of polarization are well described by a flare model in which the flare can be decomposed completely into a number of elementary flare bursts with no residual radiation left. (Flares of this type, observed on August 2 and 7, 1972, have been discussed by van Beek, de Faiter, and de Jager, 1976.)
