Abstract

USING the recently completed 210-ft. radio telescope1,2 of the Australian National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Parkes, New South Wales, we have detected linear polarization of the radio emission from the central component of Centaurus A. Many maps of this object have been made3,4, and more recently Hindman and Wade5 and Bolton and Clark6 have shown that it consists of two major extended sources several degrees in extent, together with a central core. The central component, which is closely associated with the galaxy NGC 5128, has been further resolved into two parts by Twiss, Carter and Little7 and Moffet8 using interferometers and by Little9 using a fan-beam.
