Stellar Interferometers: Polarization, Stellar Interferometers: Optical Design

Scientific paper

One of main factors affecting the performance of long baseline stellar interferometer relates to the polarization characteristics of the two light beams. Retardation and reorientation of the polarization coordinate frame of reference caused by reflection are a major cause of fringe contrast decrease. In this paper, the authors have analyzed these effects and as the result of the analysis they have recommended three sorts of typical optical layouts in which the fringe contrast decreases are minimal.
