Polarization and ion shifts of ionized-helium lines in dense plasmas are examined by using two methods. The first requires an a priori calculation of line profiles, while the second, which is more tractable, only requires a weighting of line-component energies by their respective intensities. Both methods show discrepancies of 10 - 15% for the plasma parameters investigated (1018 electrons cm-3 and 4 eV). Comparisons of the results with recently published experimental data show good agreement for a temperature of 4 eV and densities in the range 1017 - 8×1017 electrons cm-3. The polarization (red) shift is found to be larger than the ion (blue) shift.
