Variable linear polarization was observed during the 1985 outburst of RS Oph, indicating the presence of intrinsic polarization. It is possible to separate the interstellar from the intrinsic polarization, which is found to have a position angle aligned with the VLBI radio structure. This polarized flux is not strongly wavelength dependent. Scattering and synchrotron origins for the polarized radiation are investigated, but the latter origin is less likely. The interstellar polarization provides an independent limit on the distance of RS Oph.
