Polarimetric UBVR observations of the X-ray binary system Vela X-1 during January-April 1989 are presented. Vela X-1 is shown to have irregular polarimetric variability as well as periodic polarization variations connected with the system's orbital motion. The possible origin of different polarization components and its variability is discussed. The cause of the polarization variations may be the nonstationary accretion regime and the inhomogeneities in the accreting flow.
