Results of polarimetric and photometric observations of BL Lac in the period 1969-1982 published in Gagen-Torn et al. (1984) are analyzed. The photometric data are consistent with a two-component model of the object: a giant elliptical galaxy plus a point source which varies in intensity, but has an unchanged energy distribution. It follows from a consideration of the polarimetric data that BL Lac has a preferred direction of polarization, and high degrees of polarization are encountered only in directions close to the preferred one. A high degree of polarization variability was observed with a characteristic time of the order of one hour but in only two cases in all out of 316.
