A two mode model is developed for transient mantle convection and plate movement. Geoid high points are associated with regions of vigorous oceanic-plate subduction in the western Pacific on one side of the earth and dispersed Pangea on the other. Convective forces are hypothesized to occur in both modes simultaneously. Slow, mantle-wide currents power the dispersal while thermally induced density contours power the oceanic plate subduction. It is predicted that the two modes will reverse sides of the planet in 100 million yr.
