The plasmapause asymmetry effect in the localization of the main ionospheric trough (MIT) is investigated on the basis of a high-latitude model which takes into account the noncoincidence of geographic and geomagnetic coordinates for winter (delta = -23 deg) and solar minimum conditions; data from vertical-sounding stations of the Iakutsk meridional chain for December 1973 are used. A comparison of calculations with experimental data shows that the observed narrowing of the MIT at midnight is due to plasmapause asymmetry relative to the geomagnetic pole. This narrowing 'divides' the MIT bottom into evening and morning hours, forming 'holes' in the ionosphere.
